On this auspicious day, devotees worship Lord Ganesha with great devotion and offer him various offerings such as modak, ladoo, coconut, durva grass, flowers, and fruits. They also observe a fast (vrat) and listen to or recite the story (katha) of Lord Ganesha's birth and his deeds. The vrat katha is believed to bring blessings, prosperity, and happiness to the devotees. There are different versions of the vrat katha for different months and occasions. Some of the most common ones are:

  • Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat Katha: This is the story of how Lord Ganesha was born from the dirt of Goddess Parvati's body and how he got his elephant head from Lord Shiva. This story is recited on the main day of Ganesh Chaturthi.

  • Ganesh (Vinayaka) Chaturthi Vrat Katha: This is the story of how Lord Ganesha helped King Nala and his wife Damayanti to overcome their troubles and reunite with each other. This story is recited on the fourth day of the waning moon phase (Krishna Chaturthi) in the month of Bhadrapada.

  • Ganesh Jayanti Vrat Katha: This is the story of how Lord Ganesha was born from a mango given by Sage Kashyapa to Goddess Parvati and how he defeated a demon named Sindhu. This story is recited on the fourth day of the waning moon phase (Krishna Chaturthi) in the month of Magha, which is usually in January or February.
